Summer Term Information

20.04.2020

Hello Herons!

We hope you have had a relaxing Easter break and are ready to start our Summer term even though we aren’t back in school just yet. We are missing you all lots! Our new topic for this term is...

Ocean Adventures!

Throughout this topic we will be learning lots about Brunel, the ocean, our country and the things around us by exploring tasks linking to Geography, History, Art and much more. We have planned lots of fun activities for you to be doing while learning at home which can be found in your new homework menu (file attached below). For more resources and links, keep scrolling down this page to find information for each subject.

Remember, other places you can find extra activities are Purple MashSumdogTT Rockstars and Education City (your log in is the same as your Sumdog password).

Please expect a telephone call from us this week to talk to both you and your parents to check in and see how you are. We will answer any questions you may have and ensure you are all finding and understanding the activities in the Home Learning Menus.

Stay safe,

Mrs Williams and Mrs D'Ovidio.

As well as the activities listed in your Home Learning Menus, please find below website links to help with the activities or other ideas to try too:

Rapid Reading

Online Safety:

During home learning, the children may use computing more than usual and it is really important for us to stay safe online. Also, we must remember to balance the children's screen time. If you need any information on your child's screen time, then please check our online safety tab and it will have lots of documents for you to explore.

You could also explore these documents which explore a healthy me diary and a computing home learning document.

Please always remember:

Reading

Please try to make sure you are reading for at least 15 minutes a day. Explore different places you can read, make a reading den, or try reading to a sibling or your pet!

Oxford Owls - This is a great website that have a big selection of banded books and a variety of fiction and non fiction books too.

David Walliams audible books - One of our favourite authors is releasing a new audio book each day, have a listen or try and read along too if you have the book!

Comprehension activities:

Reading question cards - Try answering some of the questions on these reading response cards during and after you have read to check you have understood the story.

You could also try the following:

  • Predicting what is going to happen next.
  • Creating a story board to show how the character’s feelings have changed throughout the book/chapter.
  • Picking out sentences and using them to explain how or why a character might be feeling a certain way.
  • Imagining what a character from your story looks like and trying to draw a picture of them.

English

Talk for Writing Booklets

Please find below the appropriate Year 2 Talk for Writing booklets 'The Magical Teaching Box.'

Try to work through these to develop understanding of structuring writing, implementing grammar in context and for plenty of fun writing activities.

ChatterPack

Below is a link to a website called ChatterPack who have created a huge list of links of home learning resources for schools and families. It contains so many brilliant resources and ideas - links to free audio books, maths games, virtual tours of zoos and so much more.
